Storylines

Tanya grew up on a council estate and dabbled in drugs during her youth. She became a hairdresser and babysitter, and got pregnant by Max Branning when she was 18. Max left his wife Rachel and son Bradley to be with her and their daughter, Lauren. They married and later had a second daugher, Abi together. Max cheated on Tanya during their marriage, and shortly before they arrived in Walford, she had discovered his affair with Gemma Clewes.

Max decided to move to Walford when he found out that Bradley was living with his father, Jim, and sold it to Tanya as a new start for the family following his recent affair. He did not tell her about his family connection to Walford until after they had moved into 5 Albert Square. Max later bought Tanya a beauty salon, which she named Booty. She employed her old friend and colleague Gaynor Lucas as well as Chelsea Fox and Preeti Choraria.

Tanya was unaware that Max had embarked on an affair with Bradley's girlfriend, Stacey Slater. After a fight with Stacey at Peggy Mitchell's birthday party, Tanya kissed her brother Sean, but stopped it going further for the sake of her marriage. When Tanya became pregnant, Max broke off his affair with Stacey and relocated the family to Spain. When they returned weeks later, Stacey and Bradley had got engaged. Tanya recieved a visit from her drug addicted sister Rainie, who said she was clean. Tanya gave her the choice to stay and fight her addictions, or to leave with some money. Rainie took the money and left. Sean discovered Max and Stacey's affair, and without telling Tanya, asked her to leave Walford with him. She declined, saying that she might had she not been married. In December 2007 she gave birth to a baby boy, named Oscar by Abi. On Christmas day, Lauren gave Bradley a DVD of his and Stacey's wedding, which included footage of Max kissing Stacey. Tanya found out about the affair while sitting around with the family and the Slaters to watch the DVD. She ended her marriage to Max and got together with Sean, planning revenge on her husband. Rainie turned up again in Walford, returning Tanya's money to her and promising that she was off drugs. Max called social services, who drug tested Rainie and found cannabis in her system. Tanya told her sister to leave. Tanya and Sean drugged Max and buried him alive in a coffin, but Tanya felt guilty and went back to dig him up. Max and Tanya argued and Max decided to leave Walford for a while to give Tanya space. She also dumped Sean, telling him she had been using him all along.

In Max's absence, Tanya began a relationship with his younger brother Jack. When Max returned, he was furious and had a big fight with Jack. Tanya took pity on him and they kissed. Max was later run over in a hit and run. Tanya admitted to the crime and went to prison awaiting trial. She was covering for Lauren, who had run Max over after he forced Peter Beale to dump her. Lauren eventually confessed, and got a two year suspended sentence. Max and Tanya reunited, despite their divorce becoming final. Max eventually moved back in, but hid his financial problems from his family, and when debt collectors started turning up at the house, Tanya decided she couldn't trust him and left Walford with Lauren and Oscar. She returned briefly on Christmas day to collect Abi, who had stayed with Max. She wasn't seen for six months, until Max turned up on her doorstep telling her he loved her. Tanya revealed to him that she was engaged to her new boyfriend Greg. She then returned to Walford in September 2010 after Lauren was kicked out of sumemr camp for smoking drugs. She supported her daughters following their cousin Billie's death, and decided that she wanted to move back to the Square so the girls could have equal time with both her and Max. Greg bought her number 27 Albert Square, and they moved in there. Greg bought Tanya the salon back from Roxy Mitchell as a wedding present, and she became good friends with her colleague Syed Masood. Tanya's mother Cora and Rainie turned up in Walford for Tanya's hen night. Tanya and Greg married in April 2011, but Tanya kissed Max on her wedding day after he and Abi were in a car crash.
