Polished and urbane, Steve was always a bit of a mystery to the residents of Albert Square. He arrived under Annie Palmer’s aegis, bought and renovated the Market Cellar (which he called the e20), was involved in and jailed for the murder of ex-girlfriend Saskia Duncan, became a drug addict while attempting to deal with the associated guilt, and was instrumental in bringing Sharon Watts back to Walford.
Steve had long-standing issues involving his mother Barbara, a close relationship with sister Jackie and a lukewarm friendship with one-time business partner Beppe di Marco. After reconciling with estranged wife Melanie, Steve began a vendetta against Phil Mitchell which backfired and killed Steve! Although following his death the police tried to pin drug dealing/money laundering charges on him, it's entirely possible that they were fabricated by Phil.
