Summary

Sonia is the third of Carol Jackson’s four children (fathered by someone named Terry Cant), and initially existed primarily to annoy her family via her terrible trumpet playing! As a teenager, viewers came to know her as sensitive, intelligent and caring, which is why Jamie Mitchell loved her despite more attractive locals vying for his attention. In 2001, Sonia was surprised to discover she was pregnant after losing her virginity to Martin Fowler. She subsequently gave up her baby, Chloe, for adoption and returned to her nursing studies, but, in a fit of madness, blew off college, tried to get pregnant by Jamie, and then kidnapped Chloe - by then, adopted as Rebecca Miller. She seemed to settle down for a while with new flame Gus, but that ended upon her reconciliation with Jamie. Jamie's subsequent death, caused by Martin Fowler, left Sonia grieving for a while, before she started a romance with Jamie's killer, Martin, whom she married in June 2004.

A brief reunion with daughter Rebecca ended in further heartbreak, and she and Martin decided to concentrate on building a new life. Her nursing studies have led her to become acquainted with a more cultured crowd, and she and her barrow-boy husband's divergent interests, little time alone together, and the kiss she recently shared with study buddy Naomi caused them to grow apart. These marital problems were put on the back burner while she and Martin cared for their biological daughter, Rebecca Miller, while the child's grandmother recovered from an illness. Once Rebecca was gone, the cracks in the marriage resurfaced. Sonia left Martin for Naomi, and briefly lived with her at number 3. Sonia recently turned 21, and was going to celebrate by deceiving Margaret that she and Martin were as happily married as ever. Martin was unable to continue the deception, and confessed to Margaret that he and Sonia had separated. Margaret departed in anger and refused to let Sonia see Rebecca. Sonia was miserable and heartbroken, as she and Naomi broke up, Martin asked her for a divorce, and she's back living with her grandfather, Jim. Sonia didn't seem to know what she wanted, other than a relationship with her daughter. She then somehow, and secretly, got back with Martin, later to be discovered by Dot, and then by Joe.

When Pauline Fowler discovered the couple's reunion, she hatched a plot to drive them apart - by deceiving her family that she had a brain tumour. However, this plot backfired spectacularly, when the discovery of her deceit drove her entire family back to Sonia. As Pauline prepared to depart Walford for good on Christmas Day, Sonia paid her a final visit, reminiscing about how kind Pauline had once been, and attempting to persuade her to stay. During the course of her visit, Sonia slapped Pauline, who fell over, knocking her head on the way. Pauline died, that night, from a brain haemorrhage, and, adding to Sonia discomfort at the thought it was caused by her, young Rebecca revealed that she witnesses Pauline's fall.

When Sonia decided to leave the square for a fresh start in Manchester, Martin eventually realised that Rebecca needed her mother, so the family left the square together, with Betty and Sonia's trumpet.

Sonia reappeared in Walford in February 2010 for Bianca and Ricky's second wedding. It was revealed that she and Martin were going through marital problems, and she tried to seduce Phil while she was in Walford. She eventually resolved to make it up with Martin and returned to Manchester to be with him. She missed her brother Billie's funeral later that year as she was in India visiting Robbie and couldn't get a flight back to England in time. She returned again in January 2011 when Bianca was on the run after attacking Connor Stanley. She told her family that she and Martin had split up around the time of Billie's death, and she and Rebecca had moved back to London.
