Summary
Fresh from university, Shabnam was employed at her mother's Post Office in Walford before it was closed down. Shabnam was deeply unhappy with her work and aspired to travel the world and explore her roots in Pakistan. Her mother saw her in a different class to other residents which cause some friction between her and best friend Dawn but the pair remained friends. She left her family home on good terms to go travelling to her native Karachi.

2007
Friendship with the Wicks/Foxes
On arrival in Albert Square, Zainab made an instant enemy of the Foxes and Wicks, by sacking Denise from her job and replacing her with Shabnam. Shabnam didn't like the way Zainab treated her and formed a friendship with Carly Wicks and Dawn Swann. The three of them could often be found at R&R's.
2008
Money trouble
Shabnam has learned of Zainab's financial problems with the Post Offices which are losing money hand over first. Shabs offered Zainab her savings (which she wanted to use for a round the world trip), but Zainab was too proud to accept them.
Jalil the Geek
Zainab tried to set Shabnam up with a man in the form of Jalil the Geek, an old friend of hers. He arrived, looking rather handsome and not so-geekline, so a glimmer of romance seemed to be on the cards. This was destroyed however when Shabnam learned that Jalil has a girlfriend.
It turned out though that Jalil actually liked to have a "homely" woman to cook and clean for him and be his wife, and preferred modern women to "have fun with". This disgusted Zainab and Shabnam, and they promptly threw Jalil out mid-meal to go back to Slough.
