Summary

1990-1993

Sam is the youngest of the Mitchell siblings, and first appeared aged fifteen. She would run away from home to stay with Phil and Grant, as she did not get on with mother Peggy's boyfriend, Kevin. She became friends with Hattie Tavernier and Mandy Salter, tried to forge a modeling career, and began dating Ricky Butcher. They eloped to Gretna Green and married in 1991. After a year of marriage, Sam cheated on Ricky with a man named Clive, and decided to end her marriage and become a holiday rep, leaving Walford in 1993.

1995-1996

Sam returned to Walford in 1995, when Phil and Grant were on holiday in Spain and caught her in bed with David Wicks, forcing her to return with them. Back in London, she continued her affair with David, and tried to come between Ricky and his new girlfriend, David's daughter, Bianca Jackson. She kissed Ricky in front of Bianca, causing them to split, but when they reunited she admitted defeat, met a Spanish man named Guillermo and moved back to Spain in 1996.

1999-2000

In 1999, Sam decided to return to Walford to settle down, and became involved in a relationship with Beppe di Marco, much to her family's annoyance given his history with Tiffany. When Beppe finished the relationship, Sam moved on to club owner Steve Owen, who was using her to make Melanie jealous. A hurt Sam fled Walford once more and moved in with a friend in North London.

2002-2005

In 2002, Peggy travelled to Spain for what she believed was to be Frank's funeral. There she tracked down Sam working in a strip club and brought her back home to Walford. Back in Walford, Sam had a string of disastrous relationships and one night stands with Beppe, Steve, Trevor Morgan and Dennis Rickman.

She was left in charge of the Mitchell empire when Phil went on the run after Den Watts set him up during a robbery. Sam persuaded second cousin Billy to torch Phil's snooker hall as an insurance scam, but the fire also took hold in Angie's Den, and nearly resulted in Vicki Fowler (Den's daughter) dying. Dennis vowed revenge, but was warned off by Andy Hunter, a local gangster who began a relationship with Sam. Phil's old friend Minty tried to warn Sam against her relationship with Andy, as he had fallen for her himself and knew that Andy was using her to get the Mitchells' money. Sam and Andy later married, and he tricked her into signing over the Mitchell house to him. Mitchell family lawyer Marcus Christie (aided by Den Watts) then conned Sam out of the Mitchell businesses, telling her that Phil urgently needed money persuading her to sell up. Sam met Marcus with the money for Phil, but he drove away with it, leaving her penniless. Andy realised she was of no further use, so threw her out.

Sam teamed up with Chrissie Watts and Zoe Slater to get revenge on Den, and got him to admit to his wrongdoings while his beloved daughter Sharon listened from the shadows. When Sharon disowned Den, he attacked Chrissie, which prompted Zoe to hit him around the head with a doorstop to stop him. With Zoe thinking she had killed Den, Sam watched as Chrissie actually finished him off with the killer blow. They buried Den's body in the cellar of The Queen Vic. On the same night, Andy was thrown off a motorway fly-over by gangster Johnny Allen.

Sam began a relationship with Danny Moon and started blackmailing Chrissie. When she realised Chrissie was about to sell up and move away, she drunkenly dug up Den's body. However, this backfired on her as she was arrested for murder. Phil and Grant returned to Walford with a plan to help get Sam out of prison, and once she was free she jumped bail and moved to Brazil with Grant, not wanting to do time for perverting the course of justice.

2009-2010

Sam returned to Walford after Phil sent Ricky to give her some money. She persuaded Ricky to take her back to England on a false passport, as she was homesick. Once home, she refused to stay hidden away and was soon dancing on the tables at The Vic. She also annoyed Bianca by declaring that she and Ricky were back together. Bianca informed the police of Sam's return to the country and she was soon arrested. She was let out on bail when her cousin, Ronnie paid the surety money. Sam and Ricky got engaged, but Sam began an affair with Jack Branning, who was acting on orders from Archie Mitchell, as he was planning to take The Vic from Peggy and Phil. Archie told Bianca about Sam and Jack's affair, and she informed Ricky, who broke off the engagement. Sam then decided to accept Archie's offer of money to again skip the country. This lost the Mitchells the bail money, and with Phil in debt to loan shark Isaacs, the family lost the pub.

Sam returned on Christmas day in an attempt to reconcile with Ricky and her family. On the same day, Archie was murdered in The Vic, and the Mitchells all became suspects. Peggy and Phil came up with a plan to frame Sam for the murder to take the pressure off them, but Sam overheard this, and turned herself in to the police. When interviewed about Archie's murder, she implicated Peggy as revenge, and when Peggy visited her she rejected her mother and the Mitchell name. She was sentenced to 18 months in prison for her part in Den's death.

Later in the year, Sam returned to the Square after giving birth to baby Richard while still in custody. She made up with her mother before Peggy left Walford, and tried to get Ricky back by saying that she was sure Richard was his son. A DNA test proved that Jack was in fact the biological father, and Ronnie paid Sam to leave Walford with Richard. Before she left, she tried to get ever-dependable Minty to go with her, but he was upset when Sam interrupted George's christening and upset Heather by revealing Minty's true feelings. Minty sent Sam off alone, and she was last seen in the back of a black cab, phoning Grant to ask if she could stay with him.
