Scottish-born vicar's daughter Ruth fell in love with Mark while volunteering at an AIDS hostel and later married him. The marriage seemed to be a happy one, even though Ruth knew she could not have any children due to Mark being HIV-positive. Because of this they decided to turn to fostering, and fostered Jessie Moore. This was the beginning of the end, with many arguments about Jessie's mother. Things turned from bad to worse when Conor Flaherty, Mark's cousin arrived from Ireland. Ruth and Conor seemed to hit it off rather too well, to Mark's annoyance.
Mark eventually moved out due to a combination of the situation with Jessie and Conor. Ruth left Walford in a hurry when she became pregnant with Conor's child, determined to start a new life in Glasgow, raising the child with Conor and his daughter Mary.
