Summary
One of the two infamous Mitchell brothers, Phil has had a long and turbulent history in Albert Square. Previous storylines have concerned 'who shot Phil?', his on again/off again relationship with Lisa Shaw (and custody fight over their child Louise), the return of long-time love Sharon Watts, and battles with former close friend Dan Sullivan. In the past, Phil has been married for money (Nadia), married to Ian Beale’s mum Kathy (with whom he had son Ben, now in South Africa), been an alcoholic, slept with his brother's wife (Sharon), endured Grant's having slept with Kathy (who was Phil's wife at the time), sold stolen cars, and had an affair with Melanie Healy. Following a break-up with Sharon, he concentrated all his efforts on gaining custody of Louise and waging a vendetta against business/love rival Steve Owen but that ended with Steve's death and Louise's near-death.
More recent stories involved his romance and subsequent marriage to lovely policewoman Kate Tyler (who instigated a romance in the hopes of coercing a confession of murder in relation to Lisa Fowler's disappearance). Until 2003, Phil seemed to own most of Albert Square including his garage the Arches, the Cafe, the local snooker hall and the Vic (as well as being the primary torch-bearer for the ratings wars!). That all changed when Den Watts returned to town and set Phil up for a warehouse burglary/robbery, which left the latter with no choice but to go on the lam. He returned briefly and tussled with Ian, who shopped him to the police. He was in prison for the warehouse crime, but that didn't stop him from showing up recently with long-lost brother Grant to save mother Peggy's bacon.
Phil spent some weeks strutting about Albert Square, after having reacquired both the Arches and the Vic, but a feud with Johnny has led to Phil taking some unwise actions. He not only bribed Juley Smith to date and deflower Ruby, he told Dennis Rickman that Johnny had choked Sharon, egging Dennis on until Dennis went after Johnny and beat him nearly to death, which directly led to Johnny ordering Dennis' murder. Phil managed to convince Sharon he had nothing to do with Dennis' death, but Johnny was coming after Phil with a gun. They called an uneasy truce after Johnny learned Phil had saved Ruby's life. Phil left Walford to travel to the States with Sharon, and returned to the shocking news of Kathy's death and Ben's relocation to Walford. Things went predictably with nemesis Ian Beale, with both of them seemingly unaware of what their feuding was doing to Ben. Phil most recently enlisted Grant's help in exacting revenge on Johnny Allen for Dennis's murder. Grant kept helping even after Phil tried to run him over with a three-wheeled car. After a highly predictable escape, the brothers hugged and returned to Walford. Phil engaged in a Jekyll and Hyde battle with himself, even though he has gained unofficial custody of Ben, and showed his true colours when he tried to prevent Ben from confessing to having injured Freddie. Perhaps Ben takes more after his father than anyone could possibly have expected...
