Summary

1991-1997

Peggy first appeared in April 1991, the mother of already established characters Phil, Grant and Sam Mitchell. She was seen attempting to stop Sam eloping with Ricky Butcher, but eventually giving the couple her blessing.

She was next seen in late 1994, when her sons had fallen out because Phil had had an affair with Grant's wife, Sharon. She became landlady of The Queen Vic, and Sharon signed her shares in the pub over to Peggy before moving to America in 1995.

In 1996, Peggy began a relationship with dodgy businessman George Palmer. In December of that year she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and had to have a lumpectomy. She and George got engaged, but Phil later informed her of George's criminal dealings and she dumped him.

1998-2004

In 1998, Peggy began a relationship with Frank Butcher, and the couple planned to marry. The wedding was nearly called off after Peggy had to have a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery, but she beat cancer and married Frank in April 1999. Unbeknown to Peggy, Frank had started an affair with his ex-wife Pat Evans, and planned to leave her to be with Pat. Peggy read his farewell letter to a packed Queen Vic with Pat and Frank standing either side of her, and slapped them both and ran away crying. Following this, Peggy descended into depression, became reliant on tranquilisers and smashed up the pub on Christmas day. She was forced to sell the pub as Frank had left her in severe debt, but regretted it when she realised the new owner was Sharon.

Peggy then embarked on a relationship with Harry Slater. They got engaged and planned to emigrate to Spain, but Peggy called off the engagement when she discovered that Harry had raped his niece, Kat and fathered her daughter, Zoe. She later managed to reclaim The Vic from Sharon, before going to Brazil to care for Grant, who had been badly injured in a car accident. She returned briefly in 2004 for Sam's wedding to Andy Hunter, leaving Sam in charge of the Mitchell empire. However, the family lawyer, Marcus Christie and Den Watts conned Sam out of the family's businesses while Peggy was in Brazil and Phil was on the run.

2005-present

Peggy returned to Walford when Sam was wrongly imprisoned on remand for Den's murder. She confronted the real killer, Chrissie Watts, at Den's funeral, pushing her into the grave. She also got into a feud with gangster Johnny Allen, turning his daughter Ruby against him. Johnny hired a thug to beat Peggy up, but she was saved by sons Phil and Grant, who had returned to Walford to help get Sam out of prison. They did so, and Sam skipped bail, moving to Brazil, and Sharon sold the pub, which she had inherited from Den, back to Peggy and Phil.

In 2006 Peggy had a brief romance with Jack Edwards, which ended when Peggy had trouble accepting Billy and Honey's Down syndrome baby, Janet. In 2007 she found herself in debt, and had to get nieces Ronnie and Roxy to help her out financially.

In 2008, Peggy visited her ex-brother-in-law, Archie Mitchell, and they quickly got together and announced their engagement. Not long after, Archie began controlling Peggy, telling her what to wear and how to behave. They married in April 2009, however, at the wedding reception it was revealed that Archie had been lying to his family, keeping daughter Ronnie's long-lost daughter Danielle a secret, and had slept with Phil's girlfriend Suzy Branning. Peggy then instructed Phil to kill Archie, but Phil merely scared Archie out of Walford.

Archie returned months later, trying to get back into his family's lives, however, Peggy has refused to let him back into the fold.
