Patrick was first seen arriving for the funeral of his estranged wife, Audrey Trueman after abandoning his sons, Anthony Trueman and Paul Trueman, when they were young. He decided to remain in Walford and assist his sons in the running of Audrey’s bed and breakfast. Not long after their fathers arrival, Paul began to have doubts regarding Patrick when his stories of past times didn’t often match up. After collecting a sample of Patrick’s DNA, the brothers were shocked to discover that Patrick was who he said he was. However, he was only Anthony’s father and not Paul’s. Paul was in the fact the product of an affair Audrey had with Patrick’s best friend, Milton Hibbert. Regardless of having no biological connection, the pair still regarded one another as father and son. Patrick’s biological son, Anthony, left Walford in July 2003 to help disadvantaged people in India.
During a holiday to Trinidad in the Summer of 2003, Patrick met a married Jamaican woman, Yolande Duke. Unbeknown to Patrick, his best friend Jim Branning began sending love letters to Yolande posing as Patrick. As a result, Patrick was not best pleased when Yolande turned up at his home in September 2003 having left her husband, Victor Duke. Not long after, Victor turned up in Walford trying to convince Yolande to return home to her role as a housewife. He offered Patrick a sum of £15,000 to give up on his holiday romance and manipulated the situation to lead Yolande into believing Patrick had accepted the money. Yolande disappeared, taking the money, but returned days later following Victor’s departure. Patrick later proposed and the pair married in a quiet ceremony, in July 2004.
In August 2004, Patrick and Yolande began considering the prospect of fostering. In order to offer a stable home, they were advised to close down their bed and breakfast and made an offer on the Minute Mart. Their offer was accepted and they re opened the business in September 2004. They later briefly fostered a young girl, Katie who they became very attached to and were devastated when she was returned to her mother at Christmas 2004.
It was around this time that Patrick discovered Paul had got himself in some dodgy business working for Andy Hunter. Patrick was shocked when Paul approached them at Christmas to inform them he was leaving Walford for some time to clear his head. Not long after, Patrick discovered Paul’s bank account had been inactive and became suspicious of his sons whereabouts. Paul was reported missing and a body was later found. Patrick was able to identify the body of Paul, a man he brought up and regarded as his son.
In November 2005, Yolande became suspicious of Patrick and suspected he was having an affair. To secure their future together, they decided to start a new business venture and rented the car lot from the Mitchell’s. This is where Patrick employed Pat Evans to assist him with the business accounts. It wasn’t long before their business relationship led to the bedroom and their pair embarked on a fling, soon discovered by shop worker Stacey Slater. Patrick later called off the affair realising how much he loved his wife but it wasn’t long after that Stacey told Yolande about the affair at Pauline Fowler and Joe Macer's wedding reception in February 2006. The pair agreed to give up the car lot business and work on rebuilding their marriage.
The arrival of an old friend of Patrick’s, Cedric Lucas brought back memories of his involvement in a band, The Five Hectors. Cedric had became frail in his years and confessed to Patrick he was terminally ill before going away to die peacefully. It wasn’t long after that newcomer Denise Fox revealed to Yolande that she never knew her father but he was part of a band called The Five Hectors. Patrick took a DNA test however the results revealed he was not Denise’s father. When an excited Libby Fox asked him about the results, he couldn’t bring himself to tell her that he wasn’t her grandfather and subsequently lied. Patrick later confessed the truth when both families went on holiday in December 2006.
In August 2007, Patrick was attacked in the Minute Mart by a mystery assailant and was found by Chelsea Fox and Deano Wicks. The pair provided statements to the police saying they saw Sean Slater attack him following a loud disagreement earlier in the day containing small elements of racism. After being released from prison, he thanked Chelsea and Deano for their bravery. It took Patrick time to adjust to crowded places but with help from friends and family, he began to adjust to routine again.
Later that month it was revealed Patrick’s attacker was in fact Craig Dixon, a youth he’d had a disagreement with regarding the sale of alcohol. Deano Wicks had hidden the shops CCTV tape in order to try and frame Sean for the attack. The tape was later recovered by Kevin Wicks and the pair were imprisoned for perverting the course of justice.
In September 2008, Patrick unknowingly sold unchilled food to customers and they subsequently contracted food poisoning. As a result of the shops inspection from head office, Yolande was offered a job at the head office in Birmingham. Yolande began preparing for the move but later discovered from Patrick that he wanted to stay in Walford. Yolande left Walford in October 2008, shocking friends when she announced she would be leaving alone. Patrick agreed to meet Yolande once the sale of their home had completed.
During their time apart, the pair grew distant and Patrick later confessed to Jim Branning that he wouldn’t be visiting Yolande over Christmas. Denise offered her efforts to Patrick and went to Birmingham in hope of bring Yolande home. Patrick waited excitedly for her return but was hurt when Denise returned home alone – Yolande wanted to end their marriage. Despite accepting their separation, Patrick will always love her.
Patrick later discovered Denise’s fiancé Lucas Johnson had spent Christmas with his wife, Trina Johnson. Patrick advised Trina to stay away from Lucas and their son because of her drug addiction. Patrick advised Lucas to confess to Denise about his secret however Lucas turned the tables and blackmailed Patrick about his dark secret from the 1950’s. A secret had had discovered following the arrival of a stranger, Theo Kelly who wanted to know more about Patrick’s history in London. Patrick had been arrested for assaulting a minor during a race riot during the Notting Hill riots.
Patrick discovered the truth behind Theo’s appearance, he’d been asked by his neighbour Tommy Clifford to contact him. Tommy claimed he was writing a book about the history of London in the 1950’s, however it soon emerged Tommy wasn’t writing a book and was in fact the man who set fire to a house that killed Patrick’s fiancée Ruth 50 years prior. Following Tommy’s departure, Patrick received a letter informing him that Tommy was terminally ill in hospital and wanted forgiveness. After much opposing, Patrick was persuaded by Libby to visit Tommy before he died. Patrick forgave Tommy, before he passed away in April 2009.
