Loveable Nigel Bates was Grant Mitchell's best friend and a widower following the death of his beloved Debbie. He doted on his adopted daughter Clare Tyler, and worked in the Video Shop. He was Dot Cotton's best friend - one might even say the son she never had - and was instrumental in her return to Walford in 1997. Nigel found love again in the form of Julie Haye, much to Clare's dismay as Ms. Hay was her teacher, and left Walford in April 1998, to move to Scotland with her.
