Storylines
Max is the fifth child of Jim and Reenie Branning, and had a difficult relationship with his father. He married a woman named Rachel when they were young and they had a son, Bradley in 1987. Two years later, Max cut all contact with his parents, but kept in touch with his siblings, particularly Carol. Max cheated on Rachel with his hairdresser, Tanya Cross, and walked out on his family when Tanya became pregnant. Tanya gave birth to Max's first daughter, Lauren in 1994, and she was followed in 1996 by Abi. Shortly before they arrived in Walford, Tanya had discovered Max's affair with Gemma Clewes.
Max turned up in Walford to see Jim, and discovered that Bradley was living with his grandfather. He decided to stick around to build bridges with Bradley, and rented a house from Ruby Allen without telling Tanya that his family lived in the square. Tanya gave him one last chance and the family moved in. Max then bought Tanya the beauty salon on Turpin Road, which she named Booty. When Bradley's girlfriend, Stacey Slater became pregnant, Max gave Bradley money for an abortion. After the abortion, Bradley and Stacey's relationship broke down, and angry at Bradley, Stacey seduced Max. They began an affair, but Max ended it when he found out that Tanya was pregnant. When Stacey found out, she told Max that he had thirty minutes to tell Tanya about their affair or she would. Max managed to persuade his family to go on a an impromtu holiday to Spain, and they stayed there for weeks, looking at the possibility of moving there. When they returned, Bradley and Stacey had reconciled and got engaged. On their wedding night, Lauren got footage of Max kissing Stacey after hiding her camcorder. Max and Tanya's son, Oscar was born in December 2007. Lauren burned her footage onto a DVD, which the family sat down to watch on Christmas day, revealing Max and Stacey's affair. Tanya ended their marriage, and later drugged Max and buried him alive as revenge. Max decided to leave the Square to give Tanya space, but when he returned he found her in a relationship with his brother Jack. Max tried to split them up by framing Jack for a shooting, after which Jack kidnapped Max and beat him up. Following this, Tanya took pity on Max and kissed him. Later that evening, Max was run over in a deliberate hit and run, which Tanya confessed to. It transpired that Tanya had been covering for Lauren, who had tried to kill Max after he forced Peter Beale to dump her. Lauren got a two year suspended sentence, and Max and Tanya reunited. However, Max hid his financial problems from his family, instead conning residents of Walford such as Masood Ahmed, Heather Trott, Ian Beale and Phil Mitchell. When debt collectors turned up at the house, Tanya ended their relationship again and left Walford with Lauren and Oscar. Max later sent Abi to live with Tanya as well.
Max decided to go into business with Bradley, and leased the car lot from Roxy Mitchell. They opened Branning and Son car dealers. After Archie Mitchell's murder on Christmas day 2009, Max found out that Bradley had seen Archie that day and punched him because he had raped Stacey. When the police came for Bradley, Max and Jack tried to help him and Stacey flee Walford, but the police chased Bradley to the roof of the Queen Vic, where he fell and lost his life. Stacey admitted to Max that she had killed Archie, and then disappeared. Max slipped into a deep depression, and was cared for by Carol. He also had a brief fling with Stacey's friend Becca, who he then followed to track Stacey down. After an emotional confrontation, Max brought Stacey home to Walford and agreed to keep her secret, as the police had blamed Archie's death on Bradley. Max met Vanessa Gold when she bought a car from him, and they had a fling, despite her being married to Harry. Vanessa ended their fling when she realised Max was still in love with Tanya, and Max tried to win Tanya back, only for her to tell him that she was engaged to her new boyfriend Greg Jessop. Max took in his employee Darren Miller as a lodger after he was made homeless. Vanessa and her daughter Jodie also moved in after Harry threw them out.
At his nephew Billie's funeral, Max let slip to Lauren that Bradley didn't kill Archie. Intent on discovering the identity of the murderer, Lauren eventually worked out that it was Stacey, secretly recording a confession from her sister-in-law. Lauren gave the recording to Janine Malloy, but Max was able to break into Janine's flat and delete it. Janine announced in the pub that Stacey had killed Archie, and Max helped her escape before the police arrived in Walford. He began persuing Tanya, who had moved back to Walford, and kissed her on her wedding day after he was involved in a car crash. When Tanya was playing hard to get, Max proposed to Vanessa and she accepted.
