Masood is married to Zainab and worked for the Royal Mail as a postman. Early on in his time in the Square, Masood received the news that his father was ill, so he went to Karachi to be with him. When he returned, Zainab revealed that the family were in debt, and they were forced to close down the Post Office. Their new business venture Masala Masood began as a success but profit estimations were not enough to keep the business open. When Shabnam departed Walford, Masood and his family decided to open a factory premises to expand their business venture. Masood later borrowed money from Ian Beale to help his business, which led to Masood and Zainab going into business with Ian, Jane and Christian Clarke running a catering company. Masood and Jane struck up a close friendship, bonding over their larger-than-life spouses.
Zainab later accused Masood of stealing money from the business, as he was a former gambling addict. It turned out that Tamwar had been stealing the money for his shamed brother, Syed, who Masood had disowned years previously when Syed stole money from the family. Zainab secretly met up with Syed, and Masood found out and went to confront him. Syed lied that he was a successful property developer and tried to get his family to give him money, but his landlord revealed that he was unemployed and behind on the rent. Syed eventually moved back in with his family and became engaged to his girlfriend, Amira. Unknown to his family and fiancée, Syed also embarked on a gay love affair with Christian.
Masood then tried to organise the trip of a lifetime for himself and Zainab. This was scuppered when Tamwar revealed that he hadn't got into Oxford University, and Zainab found out she was pregnant. Zainab initially said that she didn't want the baby, which caused friction between her and Masood as Islam is against abortion. Zainab eventually decided to keep the baby, but when Lucy Beale wrote "Bad boy" on the Masoods' front door (referring to Syed), Zainab assumed it meant that Masood had been unfaithful to her. Masood planned to go to Pakistan, but Syed, Amira and Tamwar managed to get him to reconcile with Zainab. With Syed and Amira's wedding and a baby on the way, Masood began moonlighting as a taxi driver for Archie Mitchell and Janine Butcher. The stress of working three jobs got to him and he fell asleep at the wheel, crashing the car and injuring himself and Rachel Branning. Due to some quick thinking from Amira, Masood lied to the police that he had swerved to avoid a moped and escaped prosecution. Masood later went to his older brother Inzamam for money for the wedding, but when Zainab revealed that Inzamam had made advances towards her in the past, Masood cut ties with his brother.
After the wedding, Zainab went into labour while trapped in the Masala Queen unit, and was helped by Christian. When baby Kamil was born he was not breathing, so Masood had to use CPR on him to save his life. Soon after, Masood was accused of stealing post, when the real culprit was Billy Mitchell. He also got in trouble with Zainab for gambling at Ricky Butcher's stag party, as he had gambled away the family's savings 20 years previously.
On Syed's birthday, Masood walked in on him and Christian kissing. He left quickly and pretended not to see, but later told Zainab (who already knew) about their son's infidelity. Syed overheard their conversation, and later came out as gay, humiliating Amira at their flat-warming party. Masood disowned his son once more, ignored Qadim Shah's violence towards Christian and clashed with Zainab when Jane revealed she had known since the wedding. Zainab and Masood later made up, agreeing to make any further decisions together, but when Zainab had a go at Tamwar over his decision not to go to university, Masood chucked her out of the house. Masood then asked Jane (who he had kissed during a heart-to-heart) if he could go to America with her to visit her family. She said no and left without him, and Mas later let Zainab return home. After a failed suicide bid, they also accepted Syed back into the family, and were pleased when he sought the services of Allen Conlon, a therapist who claimed he could cure Syed's homosexuality. After weeks of therapy, Syed was still in love with Christian, and walked out of a party thrown by Zainab to find him a new wife. Masood and Zainab followed him and saw him reunite with Christian, who he moved in with. Syed was once again disowned, with only Tamwar refusing to act like his brother was dead.
Tamwar started dating Afia Khan, whose father wanted to meet Tamwar's parents. When Masood set eyes on Afia's father, he attacked him and threw him out of the house, revealing that he was Yusef Khan, Zainab's first husband. Masood ignored Yusef's attempts at reconciliation, banning Tamwar from seeing Afia. When Masood learned that Zainab was planning to go behind his back and buy the Argee Bhajee restaurant, he fled Walford with Jane to a hotel, where they kissed, but stopped themselves before having sex. Feeling guilty, he supported Zainab's decision to buy the restaurant. After much angst, he also agreed to let Tamwar become engaged to Afia. At the couple's mangni (engagement party), the roof of the restaurant fell in because Masood had failed to pay Greg Jessop for essential repair work. Syed was injured in the falling debris, and Masood was seen phoning the hospital to see if he was alright.
