Summary
Martin is the son of the late Pauline and Arthur Fowler, and brother to Michelle and the late Mark. Until recently, Martin's primary storylines involved some sort of delinquent behaviour along with running mate Asif, including vandalism, burglary and drug-taking. Once he discovered that he had fathered Sonia Jackson's daughter, Chloe, Martin has started to mature, but his accidental killing of Jamie Mitchell aborted that for a while, when he was sent to prison.
His mum's friend Derek Harkinson did his best to be a father figure and Martin began running the family's fruit-and-veg stall following a period of rebellion. Derek's having taken the rap for Martin's marijuana patch was a bit of a wake-up call for him. Since brother, Mark, left Walford, and then died, Martin has been without a true confidante, but his decision to woo and wed Sonia Jackson seems to have resulted in a reformed character. After a painful temporary reunion with daughter Chloe (now Rebecca Miller) and laying down the law with the meddling Pauline, Martin and Sonia seemed to be a contented married couple. The kiss Sonia shared with study buddy Naomi was the fuse that led to an explosion of marital discord, which was put on the back burner while he and Sonia cared for their biological daughter, Rebecca Miller, while the child's grandmother recovered from an illness. Once Rebecca was gone, the cracks started to show again. Sonia left Martin for Naomi, leaving Martin heartbroken, but he then asked Sonia for a divorce and briefly enjoyed a romance with Carly Wicks. Martin's world was shaken when Margaret Wilson died, naming him as Rebecca's guardian. Pauline's constant interference has been a cause of much stress to the new father - Rebecca is currently residing with Martin, Pauline, and Joe in the Fowler home.
Martin finally felt that Pauline's interference was getting too much when he felt compelled to go behind her back in order to reconcile with Sonia. As time went on, and Pauline's hatred of her former daughter-in-law showed no sign of easing Martin increasingly felt that he would have to sacrifice his relationship with his mother in order to be with the woman he loved. However, the news that Pauline was terminally ill with a brain tumour caused him to reassess his plans and priorities, and he decided that his love for Sonia would be the sacrifice he made.
Upon the revelation of Pauline's deceit, he, Rebecca and Joe moved in with Sonia, leaving Pauline alone. Pauline responded by cutting all ties with her son, even returning the stall to the council, and very nearly departing for Florida. Martin found his mother's body, next to his father's bench, on Christmas Day. He has since confessed to Ian that he is glad of her death.
When Sonia decided to leave the square for a fresh start in Manchester, Martin eventually realised that Rebecca needed her mother, so the family left the square together, with Betty and Sonia's trumpet.
