Summary
Long-time Walford stalwart Mark Fowler became the first major victim of the great bloodbath of 2002/3. Back when EastEnders started, Mark was Walford’s first surly teenager. He ran away in 1986 & came back in 1990 transformed into Todd Carty. He also brought HIV back from his stint on the streets, & this remained Mark’s primary storyline throughout his years on EastEnders, right up til the end (he supposedly left Walford to die in dignity from AIDS).
He’s been married three times; first wife Gill died on their wedding night from AIDS & second wife Ruth left him due to his inability to have children with her. He married Lisa (nee Shaw) despite knowing she was carrying Phil's baby and predictably it ended badly. Additionally, Mark pushed teen running mate Nick Cotton off of a roof, causing him to spend the rest of his days a cripple. Mark's death from AIDS complications (Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma off-camera) was announced on the episode that aired April 13, 2004. His funeral of April 22 was a sadly diminished one, certainly not worthy of so beloved a character both on and off screen.
