Summary
Mandy's mother Lorraine was a friend of Pat Butcher from their days of working as prostitutes together. Pat agreed to take Mandy in while Lorraine was in hospital. Mandy clashed with Pat's husband Frank, and left Walford. She returned later in the year, squatting in Mark Fowler's empty flat. Manipulative Mandy blackmailed Ian Beale, stole profits from the fruit and veg stall after Pete gave her a job, and tried to break up Hattie Tavernier and Steve Elliot's relationship. She befriended Sam Mitchell, and later became obsessed with Mark, dressing in his dead wife Gill's clothes and reading her diary. After getting kicked out of the squat, Kathy Beale took her in, until Mandy spread rumours that Kathy had been abusive towards her. Kathy threw her out and she ended up sleeping rough. Mark took pity on her again, and moved her in with him and Steve. Mandy then persuaded Steve to leave Hattie just days before their wedding.
Lorraine sent Mandy a Christmas card promising to visit her, but when she didn't show up, Mandy went to her flat. The only person there was Lorraine's abusive boyfriend, Gary, who became violent towards Mandy. Mark turned up and saved her, punching Gary and taking her back to Walford. Mandy later started dating trainee footballer Aidan Brosnan. She was a bad influence on him, persuading him to skip practice, and introducing him to drugs and alcohol. While drunk, Aidan fell and injured his knee, ending his dream of becoming a professional footballer. He later returned to his native Ireland, and Mandy followed him. She returned alone after getting a frosty reception from his family. Aidan later returned to Walford to be with her. The young couple squatted in various places around Walford and begged as well as doing odd jobs. Mandy also started acting as a prostitute, only to run off with the money without having sex with her clients. This was stopped after her fellow prostitutes beat her up. Aidan became depressed and on Christmas day, was contemplating throwing himself off of a tower block. Mandy managed to talk him out of it, but he left Walford the next day. After this, Mandy had a one night stand with Ricky Butcher, but couldn't get over Aidan, and left Walford after stealing Pauline Fowler's purse and hitching a lift with a lorry driver.
