Lucy is Cindy and Ian Beale's daughter, and the twin sister of Peter Beale.
The Beale twins' early childhood was eventful to say the least - having to deal with their mother's death, the break-up of two of their father's marriages (one to the twins' former nanny) and the departure of older brother, Steven - all before the age of 10.
In 2004, Lucy also welcomed younger brother Bobby into the family, but struggled a year later to adjust to the idea of yet another prospective step-mother, Jane Collins, often making Jane's initial months with the family unnecessarily difficult. The tragic loss of his gran, and his family's accommodation of Ben Mitchell also saw Peter and Lucy lending support to the family.
Hitting her teenage years, rebellious Lucy has pushed both her father and step-mother to breaking point on several occasions, particularly with her dubious taste in boyfriends.
The first of her dangerous boyfriends was 18-year-old Craig Dixon, who Ian hired to work in the chippy for the summer. They was an instant attraction and kept their relationship secret from Ian. Lucy's behaviour worsened under Craig's influence, as he encouraged her to disobey Ian, drink alcohol and shoplift vodka. None of this, however, compared to persuading Lucy to conceal evidence when Craig assaulted Patrick Trueman in the Minute Mart and left him for dead.
When Ian eventually discovered their relationship, he attacked Craig and warned him never to go near Lucy again. This made the pair only more determined to be together and they snuck off to a motel together. It was when Craig pressured Lucy into having sex with him that Lucy suddenly realised what she had taken on. She duped Craig into returning to Walford and fled back into the arms of her frantic father.
Lucy revealed to police that Craig had been responsible for the attempted murder of Patrick Trueman. He was caught and arrested that afternoon, but not before planting his gun in Lucy's overnight bag – the same gun that would later be used to shoot Lucy's step-mother, Jane.
The relationship between Ian and Lucy continued to deteriorate after Craig's arrest. When Ian began to receive macabre gifts and deliveries, he first placed the blame on Phil, and then looked closer to home. Lucy denied sending them, but believed they were the work of the supposedly late Cindy Beale, with whom she believed she had been communicating online. Although Ian initially dismissed the notion as wishful fantasy, the messages from beyond the grave kept coming. In an attempt to put an end to it, he answered a message from 'Cindy' luring him to an abandoned set of flats, where Steven Beale - the real culprit - was waiting for him. Ian's disappearance coincided with Steven's 'surprise' arrival in Walford. Steven struggled with his guilt in the face of his heartbroken, frantic family.
No longer able to cope with the pretence, Steven took Lucy to the block of flats where he had locked Ian up and left him for dead. In the showdown that followed, Lucy managed to sneak out and call Jane for help. With the game up, Steven pulled out the gun Lucy had trusted him to dispose of for her (Craig's gun) and threatened to kill himself. A struggle ensued and the gun accidentally went off, shooting Jane in the abdomen and eventually leading to her emergency hysterectomy. Realising that his step-son needed psychiatric help, Ian booked him into a clinic and left him there.
In spite of his deception and her heartache for Jane, Lucy remained loyal to her half-brother. When Pat Evans discharged her grandson from the clinic, Lucy tried reconcile the two men, and help her brother out as best he could. In January 2008, Jane grudgingly allowed Steven to live with them, much to Lucy's delight.
In March 2008, Lucy's behaviour reached an all-time low. Ian and Jane had set off to London to accompany councillor Edward Tunstall to Buckingham Palace, where he was going to be receiving an MBE. Ian had arranged for the children to go to an amusement park with Christian for the day, but Lucy declined going, saying she had period pains. With everyone out of the picture, apart from Steven Beale, Lucy threw a big, destructive party at the Beales'. When Steven Beale phoned his father to return to Walford immediately, a violent row ensued between Ian and his daughter, ending in Ian slapping his daughter across the face - something he instantly regretted.
The next morning, the Beales awoke to discover that Lucy had run away. The police were called and the devastated Ian and Jane searched for weeks, even being called to identify a body that turned out not to be Lucy's. It later transpired that Steven had been involved in her disappearance, hiding her in a remote caravan and filling her head with the idea that her family didn't care about her and were glad she was gone. The two of them planned to flee to Paris on the Eurostar, but Ian discovered their plans at the last minute and pursued them to St Pancras Station. Ian managed to catch up with them before they boarded the train and made her realise what Steven had done. Lucy returned home with her father, and Steven was kicked out by Ian and told never to come back.
In June 2009, Lucy, along with several others, found herself held hostage in her father's cafe. Nick Cotton, in a drugged, unbridled rage after failing to kill his mother for the umpteenth time, stormed into Kathy's Cafe, taking hostage those inside. Although frightened herself, Lucy comforted best friend Lauren and Abi, and a terrified Dotty. She managed to escape with the other hostages when a fire started in the cafe kitchen, allowing Bradley Branning and a stranger to distract and over-power Nick.
