Summary
Stacey Slater's mother, Jean suffers from bipolar disorder. After a harrowing return home for Stacey in 2005, culminating in Jean's attempted suicide, Jean was admitted to a mental hospital. She turned up again in June 2006, looking rested and back on her medication. She refused to let Stacey leave Walford to look after her, as she wanted to prove to Stacey she could do it on her own.
She appeared once again when son Sean returned to London, and once more thereafter, when she spent Christmas with Charlie, Mo and Stacey in the square.
Since late 2007 Jean has lived with Stacey, Mo and Charlie.
Storylines since living on The Square
On the night of the revelation of Stacey Slater and Max Branning's affair Jean was with the Branning and Slater family sitting watching the DVD of Max and Stacey kissing. While everyone knew what had happened, Jean was devastated by what she saw and tried to convince herself that Max and Stacey were pretending and playing a joke on everybody.
Taken hostage by Sean
In May 2008 Jean was taken hostage by Sean in the back of Charlie's cab. He unintentionally drove her to where his father died and whilst there they had a heart-to-heart and Sean blurted out that Roxy Mitchell pregnant with his baby. Jean was delited at the thought of becoming a grandmother but Sean told her that he intended to force Roxy to have an abortion, however she made him see sense. Sean then drove Jean back home.
Amy Slater's paternity
On Christmas Day 2008, Jean discovered with the rest of the family that Amy Slater is not her granddaughter when the results of a paternity test were found inside one of Ben Mitchell's home made Christmas crackers. This news left her and Sean devastated. When Sean kidnapped Amy after he got the news he contacted her, Jean was glad as she was the only person that Sean wanted contact with. When Sean later left the flat he and Amy were squatting in, she was devastated that Sean didn't contact her about this. Later she found out that Sean then drove himself, Roxy and Amy into a icy lake after telling Stacey that it was time to join his dad. On the journey, he told Roxy that they were moving into a new home as they reached the lake. Sean and Roxy fell in and the car and Amy stayed outside. Then Jack Branning and Roxy's sister Ronnie Mitchell turned up, pulling Roxy out of the lake and the last you see of Sean is him walking into the darkness.
Jean's breakdown
After Sean left Jean blamed Stacey because she had gave Amy back to Roxy and the Mitchells and Jean thought Stacey had betrayed her own brother and called her twisted and evil.
On New Years, Jean nearly burnt herself by letting her duvet accidentally cover a fan heater on the floor. It became apparent that Danielle Jones was supposed to look after her, but went to work instead, leaving Jean alone in the house.
For over a week Jean just had a blank look on her face and even spent her birthday on the sofa watching TV. Later on in the day, when Stacey had made Jean a birthday cake in the kitchen Jean told Stacey that she wished that she had never had children and that she had never been born.
On January 16th 2008 Jean had a public breakdown witnessed by many of the local residents where she ended up lying down in the middle of the road in her PJ's. After this, she decided to check herself in at the mental unit so she could recover.
On 5 March 2008 she returned to Albert Square and if she ever feels like she needs to get away she stays at "The Wendy's".
