Summary

Bert's grandson, whose existence was only just revealed to him by ex-wife Evie. On her deathbed, Evie admitted to Bert that she had raised his mother, Karen, with no knowledge of her biological father, and, consequently, neither she nor Jay have ever known he existed.

Living with Bert

At Evie's funeral, Bert and Pat were watching as a good-looking teenaged boy in a suit mourned for Evie, thinking him to be Jay. They were in for a rude awakening when a bike-mounted hoodlum asked Pat Evans for a fag, only to be shouted at by Beryl for not making more of an effort for his grandmother's funeral.

In January 2007, Beryl arrived at the Truemans', informing Bert that Jay was his responsibility thenceforth. On his arrival, he was generally grumpy and criminally-inclined, but seemed to, under it all, enjoy the prospect of living alone with his new-found grandfather.

In July 2007, Jay's father, Jase Dyer appeared on the scene, having served his time in prison, and desiring a relationship with the son he had not seen for years. While Jay and Bert were initially unreceptive, Jay gradually came around to the idea of haing his father around. Bert left the Square quietly soon after Jase's arrival, believing Jay would be better looked after by his father.

Living with his father

Despite the the usual teething problems and bouts of teenage angst, father and son were a formidable team and Jase was at his son's bedside when he fell in with a bad crowd and was stabbed by a gang leader, in January 2008.

Jay grudgingly came to accept family life with his father's girlfriend Dawn Swann and her daughter Summer, but that all changed in August 2008, when his father's criminal past caught up with him and he was murdered by his old Firm's leader, Terry Bates, on the eve of what would've been Jase's wedding to Dawn. Jay blamed Dawn for putting pressure on his father to provide the high-maintenance, materialistic lifestyle she craved, and therefore, for his death.

Living with Billy Mitchell

Following his father's funeral, Jay was fostered by Billy Mitchell (who hoped to atone for his guilt at being unable to save Jase from his death at the hands of Terry Bates). He has not made life easy for Billy, befriending prostitute Marissa, running away from home, and playing truant, but things seem to have settled down for the pair of them... for now.

They currently live in the Queen Vic.

Terry's Trial

In May 2009, Terry Bates stood trial for the murder of Jay's dad Jase Dyer. Shortly before the trial Terry's wife Viv threatened Billy that if he gave evidence both he and Jay would be harmed.

The result was that Billy decided not to give evidence and was just not going to show up at court. However Terry's mate Bird and a few other heavies decided to harm Jay anyway and held him hostage at the home of Dawn Swann, Garry Hobbs and Minty Peterson. Noticing that Jay was missing and being generally concerned for his welfare, Billy managed to track Jay down thanks to a little help from Dawn, Garry and Minty. Billy was not prepared to go into the property on his own to rescue Jay so called on his cousin Phil Mitchell as backup. However, Phil was so drunk he could barely stand let alone force his way into a flat and Billy ended up sending him back home. After calling the Police to let them know that a fight had broken out and giving them the address, Billy went in on his own to rescue Jay and as a result was beaten up by Bird and his crew. After a while the Police arrived and rescued Billy from a severe beating.

Just when it looked as if Terry was going to get away with murder, the Police brought Billy into court and he gave his evidence. The evidence sent Terry to prison for life. He was led down to the cells watched by Billy, Dawn, Garry, Minty and of course Jay.
