Storylines
Janine's mother June died of cancer when she was three years old. Her father, Frank, left her with her eldest sister, Clare, while he moved to Walford with Diane and Ricky to live with Pat Wicks. A year after Frank moved to Walford, Clare got a job in Manchester and moved there, leaving Janine with Frank and Pat.
Janine had a troubled relationship with her stepmother, and regularly threw tantrums, ran away from home and wet the bed. Pat eventually managed to persuade Frank to attend family therapy, which helped Janine's behaviour somewhat. When Pat was sent to prison for accidentally killing Stephanie Watson, Janine went to live with Clare again for a short period. In 1994 when Frank had a breakdown and left Walford, Janine stayed with Pat but was hurt by Frank's abandonment. Frank returned in 1996 and took Janine to Manchester to live with him, however he returned alone in 1998, leaving Janine with Clare once again. Janine arrived back in Walford in 1999 to live with Frank and his new wife, Peggy. She didn't get on with Peggy and tried her hardest to come between her and Frank. She slept with Jamie Mitchell to annoy her father, then spread rumours about his inadequacy in bed. Frank left Walford, and Janine, again in 2000 when his marriage to Peggy broke down following an affair with Pat.
Janine moved in with Terry Raymond, and started tapping him for money by deliberately dressing like his deceased daughter Tiffany. She also began sleeping with Billy Mitchell until he ran out of money. Janine started using cocaine and relied on Terry to fund her habit. When Terry refused to give her money, she resorted to sleeping with her drug dealer, Lee Vickers, in exchange for cocaine. When Terry tried to warn Lee off, he was badly beaten, and when Janine showed no remorse, he threw her out and left Walford. Owing Lee money, Janine turned to prostitution. One of her clients, Matt Lindsay, fell in love with her and proposed, then tried to kill himself when he saw her with another client. She also slept with Ian Beale, and later blackmailed him, threatening to tell Laura. Depressed, Janine began drinking heavily and nearly died from alcohol poisoning. Billy found her collapsed at the allotments and convinced her to give up prostitution. When Laura found out from Steven that Ian had slept with Janine, she threw a pan of hot milk in Janine's face. Janine became agoraphobic, and even resorted to eating Terrance's dog food because she was so scared to leave the flat. She eventually got over this, helped by Billy and Ricky. Janine then wanted to rekindle her relationship with Billy, but he told her that he was in love with Little Mo Morgan. Janine's attempts to break them up didn't work.
Janine then got a job at Barry Evans's car lot as his secretary. She and Paul Trueman concocted a plan for Janine to con Barry out of his money. She seduced Barry and moved in with him, then when he later proposed, she accepted, believing that he had a life-threatening heart murmur. They married on New Year's eve 2003 in Scotland, but Barry discovered on their wedding night that his illness was a false alarm. The next day, Barry and Janine went for a walk around the hills and cliffs, and an infuriated Janine confessed her whole plan to Barry. He begged her and tried to hold her, but Janine pushed him away and he fell down a cliff, breaking his neck after hitting a rock at the bottom. Janine climbed down and untied Barry's shoelace, then watched him die. She returned to Walford with Barry's ashes and inherited the car lot and house. She admitted her part in Barry's death to Pat, which proved to be her undoing when she had a fight with Laura Beale, who later fell down the stairs at her flat. Pat refused to give Janine an alibi and she was arrested for Laura's murder. She was held in remand until December 2005, when Pat went to testify at her trial and saw Frank there. He persuaded Pat to change her testimony and Janine walked free, leaving Frank waiting for her.
Janine returned to Walford in 2008 for Frank's funeral, where she caught up with Ricky, Diane, Pat, Billy and Ian. She was upset to find that she had not been left any money in Frank's will. Later in the year, Pat and Ricky discovered that Janine had been posing as a Jewish orphan named Judith Bernstein and planned to marry an elderly Jewish man, David for his money. Pat, Ricky and Billy interrupted the service, and revealed Janine's true identity, causing her new husband to have a heart attack and die. Penniless and homeless, Janine was forced to return to Albert Square.
Janine blackmailed Jack Branning by recording him confessing to his past crimes while she had him tied to a radiator. She used the recording to gain control of the car lot, which she used to start a taxi business. Jack, Pat and Ricky later usurped Janine from the car lot and told her to leave Walford. Angered, Janine sped off in her car and accidentally ran over Danielle Jones, killing her. Danielle's mother Ronnie refused to forgive Janine, so Janine teamed up with Ronnie's evil father Archie to get the Mitchell family out of The Vic. They persuaded Sam Mitchell to break her bail conditions, so the family lost their surety money. When Ian Beale offered the Mitchells a loan with the pub as security, Janine had sex with Ian and recorded it, blackmailing him to sell the loan to Archie. Janine then plotted with her flatmate Ryan Malloy to double-cross Archie. Archie and Janine kicked the Mitchells out of the pub on Christmas Eve 2009, and Archie proposed on Christmas morning. Janine's happiness was short-lived, however, when Archie revealed that he knew about her and Ryan's plan and threw her out on the street. Archie was murdered later that day, and Janine became a suspect in the police investigation. Janine tried to frame the Mitchells and Ian for the murder, and Peggy tried to plant evidence in Janine's flat, but the case was closed when Bradley Branning died, and was held responsible for Archie's murder.
Later in the year, Janine started a romance with Ryan and they married soon after. When they returned from their honeymoon, Max Branning told Janine that Ryan was the father of Stacey's baby, Lily. A feud began between Janine and Stacey, sparking fights in the street, and Janine kidnapping Lily and trying to persuade Ryan to leave the country. Janine's behaviour pushed Ryan and Stacey closer together, and they began an affair. When Janine found out, she drugged Ryan and he ended up in hospital, ending their marriage. Lauren Branning then gave Janine a recording that proved Stacey had killed Archie, and Janine planned to go public with it, but Max recorded over it before she had the chance.
