Jane first appeared in Walford on the day of the disastrous fair in the Square to celebrate the market's anniversary. She made an instant enemy of Ian Beale when he short-changed her, but then came to his aid when he was injured. Jane kept her dying husband, David Collins, a secret from most in the Square, although her desperation for comfort led her to confide in Ian and Kate Morton. Although she battled her growing feelings for Ian, it was a battle she eventually lost, and, following David's death, Jane and Ian became a couple. Her loyalties were tested when Jane gave into temptation and embarked on an affair with Grant Mitchell only to be discovered by Ian on their wedding day. After much (literal) mud-slinging, Ian forgave his fiancée's infidelity and took her back.
Since then she has continued to be a devoted mother to his children - and is particularly close to young Bobby. Ian and Jane were finally married in July 2007. Only three months later, she had to come to terms with the devastating news that she would never have children of her own after having an emergency hysterectomy, an operation she underwent after accidentally being shot by Steven Beale. She was jealous of her close friend Tanya Branning when she gave birth to Oscar, but later became his godmother. Jane then took up stand-up comedy with Tamwar Masood. Most of her jokes were about Ian, and when he eventually found out, he was initially hurt until he realised he could make money out of it by becoming Jane's agent. Annoyed by this, Jane decided to quit stand-up comedy.
Ian and Jane then went into business with Masood Ahmed, Zainab Masood and Jane's brother Christian Clarke, running a catering company. She grew close to Masood, bonding over their tempestuous marriages, while Christian grew close to Masood's son Syed Masood. Although Syed was engaged to Amira Shah, he and Christian fell in love, and Christian told Jane about their relationship. Jane then decided that she wanted a baby of her own, but when a reluctant Ian finally agreed to adoption, she could see it wasn't what he wanted and left him, after kissing Masood during a hear-to-heart. She later returned to the family when Bobby went missing. She then found out that when she had been away, Ian had slept with Janine Butcher, and had been blackmailed by Janine and Archie Mitchell. Jane tried to help Ian hide evidence that he was in the Queen Vic on the day Archie was murdered, and stood by him when he was arrested.
Later in the year, Lucy revealed to Jane that she was pregnant with Leon Small's baby. Lucy proposed that Jane adopt and raise the baby when it was born, however she later changed her mind and got a secret abortion, with Ian telling Jane that Lucy had miscarried. When Peter and Zsa Zsa Carter found out about the abortion, Ian packed Jane off to Florida to visit her parents, Roger and Linda. Masood, who was having marital difficulties, asked Jane if he could go with her, but she turned him down and left alone. While Jane was in the USA, Ian helped Lucy cheat on her GCSE exams by giving her money to buy the papers in advance from Adam Best. After Jane returned from her holiday, the twins got their GCSE results, and the school were suspicious over Lucy's grades. She later admitted to Jane that she had cheated, and Jane heard from Zsa Zsa that Lucy had had an abortion. Lucy decided to go and live with her grandmother Bev, not knowing that Jane knew about her abortion. Jane then decided to steal Ian's money, get custody of Bobby and leave him.
