Harry Osborne had grown up at 29 Albert Square, and was engaged to Lou Beale's sister Doris until he had to go and fight in the war. He went missing in action and Doris eventually married another man named Morris Miller. When Harry returned from war, he got a job at the docks, and smuggled some food to his neighbours. Little did he know, some of the meat he stole was unsanitary and a nine-year-old girl died from poisoning. He fled the counrty and only returned in 1990, when he arrived in Albert Square and took an interest in the Beale family, turning up at Steven Beale's christening. He also nearly spoke to Pauline Fowler to ask after Doris, but pulled out at the last minute. He befriended Rod Norman and Hazel, telling them stories of his travels and inspiring them both to go travelling also.
Harry died on the bench in the Square's gardens on 22 February 1990, and was found by Ethel Skinner, who revealed his past to everyone.
