Summary

One of the most multi-faceted and loved (by viewers) EE characters, Grant was a central character during his tenure in the Square. He and brother Phil first turned up as owners of the Arches and local bully boys. They got involved in all sorts of dodgy deals and scams including counterfeit money, dog-racing and boxing. Grant continued a friendship from his schooldays with Nigel Bates, treating the viewers to often touching scenes of male bonding and true friendship.

Relationship with Sharon

After romancing and then marrying Sharon Watts, Grant bought the Queen Vic for her. Although Grant beat Sharon when his jealousy or psychosis surfaced, viewers also saw his vulnerable side, as well as his Falklands-induced nightmares. He was not above hitting anyone who tried it on with Sharon, such as Eddie Royle, who ended up having brain surgery as a result of his flirtation.

During Grant’s spell in prison for GBH, Phil and Sharon got closer, and they ended up having an affair. When Grant was released, Phil and Sharon kept the secret we all knew would come out, and did in the famous Sharongate episode, in which Grant, with tears streaming down his face, played a tape of Sharon admitting she slept with Phil. The resulting showdown between the brothers left Phil in hospital, and Peggy Mitchell settling in the Square permanently.

Relationship with Tiffany and affiars while married to her

After Sharon's departure, Grant hooked up with barmaid Tiffany Raymond, and the two married after she told him she was pregnant with his child. Confusion over the child’s paternity caused a separation, and Grant made public his affair with Lorraine Wicks, which temporarily jeopardised Grant’s friendship with Nigel (who loved Lorraine). The affair fizzled out, and Grant confirmed his paternity of Courtney, which rekindled the romance with Tiffany.

Grant provided a shoulder for Kathy to cry on when Phil became an alcoholic, and, despite his protestations to the contrary, he remained unhappy in his marriage to Tiff, which culminated in an affair with Tiffany’s mother, Louise. Tiffany, disgusted, ran from their flat and fell down the stairs, but everyone assumed Grant had pushed her. Prompted by bent cop Beppe di Marco, Tiffany initially went along with the charade, but in the end she urged Beppe to tell the truth about what had happened. After Beppe’s dishonesty in his handling of the case was revealed, he was fired and Grant was cleared. Tiffany attempted to leave Grant and take Courtney with her, but Grant got to Courtney first and Tiffany’s pursuit resulted in her being killed by Frank Butcher, who knocked her down with his car just outside the Vic. Grant never fully overcame his resentment of Frank for this accidental event.

Leaving the square in 1999

Grant began dating barmaid Nina, whom he dumped after learning she had been a prostitute. Kathy had returned from South Africa in September 1999, and eventually she and Grant had an affair, prompting a bid for revenge by Phil. During a dodgy deal they were involved in, Phil attacked his brother and a fight ensued, but they soon realized the police were on their trail and fled by car, leading to the famous shooting in the car and plunge into the Thames scene that led the residents of Albert Square to believe Grant had drowned. Grant snuck back one last time to get Courtney and leave money with Phil in the hospital. Grant was then finally seen alive and well, purchasing tickets for a flight to Rio, and flashing Beppe a symbolic wave as he left England for his new life.

Return to the square and his affair with Jane

Now, six years later, Grant has reappeared in Albert Square, hard-man front in place and fists flying. A surprisingly touching reunion with ex-wife Sharon and help with seemingly insurmountable problems left Grant in the role of minor hero. He returned to his wife, children and fugitive sister, Sam, in Rio, but recently reappeared in Walford, with daughter Courtney in tow, to help Phil settle a score with Johnny Allen. During that escapade, the Grant's softer side was revealed. This involved hugging and chit-chat about therapy, and ended up with light banter in Walford.

Grant recently embarked on an extramarital affair with Jane Collins, who broke things off early on. Grant also messed about with Chelsea Fox before briefly reconciling with his wife, Carla

Leaving again

After learning that Carla had been trying to fleece him out of thousands of pounds, he dumped her in a rubbish bin and he and Courtney left Walford for Portugal.
