Ethel lived in sheltered accommodation on the edge of Walford. Ethel, and her little Willy, were frequently seen round the Square in the early years of the programme - Ethel living above Dr. Legg's surgery and working as the cleaner in the Queen Victoria. Ethel always managed to get her words mixed up with hilarious consequences. Ethel returned to Walford in the summer of 2000, suffering from cancer and only having a few weeks to live. She begged her best friend Dot to allow her to die with dignity, and Dot was there for her, even though it went again her religious principles.
