Dot was introduced in July 1985 as Nick Cotton's Christian, gossiping mother. She worked in the launderette with Pauline Fowler and was friends with Lou Beale and Ethel Skinner. Her criminal husband Charlie came and went from her life, often stealing from her. Nick was no better, and continually stole from her and conned her to feed his drug habits. He and girlfriend Hazel conned Dot into believing that they had a baby together in order to get money from her, and in 1990 Nick tried to poison her to inherit some money she had come into. In 1993, Nick arrived in Walford with wife Zoe and son Ashley in tow, and persuaded her to move to Gravesend with them.
In 1997, Dot returned to London after Nick was arrested for drug possession and Zoe moved away, taking Ashley with her. Nick followed her in 1998 and claimed to have AIDS, asking for money to visit Zoe and Ashley in France. Dot discovered that he was lying, and was actually on the run from the police, so she informed them of his whereabouts and he was arrested.
In 2000, Dot was persuaded by her terminally ill best friend Ethel to help her die, by giving her an overdose of painkillers. Nick and Ashley returned to Walford again later that year, and Nick's feud with Mark Fowler caused Ashley's death when he stole Mark's motorbike, the brakes of which Nick had cut. After the funeral, Dot threw Nick out and disowned him.
In 2001, Dot began a platonic romance with fellow pensioner Jim Branning. They became engaged on Christmas Eve, and married on Valentine's Day 2002.
In 2004, Dot was diagnosed with kidney cancer, but told no one apart from friend Dennis Rickman. She planned to die quietly, but after an argument with Den Watts, she confided in Jim and accepted treatment, making a full recovery.
In December 2006, Dot's friend and workmate Pauline was killed, and Dot took her death badly. She discovered that Pauline's husband, Joe Macer was responsible for her death and tried to apprehend him before calling the police, however, during a scuffle with Jim and Dot, Joe fell through a first floor window to his death in January 2007.
Later that year, Dot found an abandoned baby, Tomas, in a church, and hid the baby when his mother, Anya was deported. Stuggling to look after Tomas, she sought advice from her old friend, Harold Legg, who persuaded her to give him up to the authorities.
In August 2007, Jim went to stay with his daughter, Carol, who was in ill health. Two months later, Dot recieved word that Jim had had a stroke and was seriously ill. When he came out of hospital, Dot could not cope with looking after him, so he lived in a nursing home.
At Christmas 2008, Nick returned to Walford once more, with a six year old daughter, Dotty. He and Dotty plotted to kill Dot and claim on her life insurance, by making it look like she had demetia and took too many of her pills. This plan failed when Dotty realised Nick only wanted Dot's money, not her, and told Dot. Nick then disappeared, leaving Dotty with Dot.
Jim returned home in August 2009, after two years away from the square.
