The vanishing man Derek was a friend from Pauline's childhood, he reappeared in her life through her involvement with the Community Theatre. Although Pauline made a play for him, when he revealed his homosexuality they decided to remain friends. He has since become a much-needed surrogate father-figure for Martin, teaching him to drive (though the results of that were anything but positive!), running the Fruit & Veg Stall, and taking the rap for Martin's marijuana growing activities.
At Christmas time Derek was usually preoccupied with getting to know his estranged son Alex, daughter Mary, and his grandson; since then he also reconciled with his ex-boyfriend. Derek eventually found life with Pauline Fowler too much, and left the Fowler household after a string of rows with Pauline to live with his formerly-estranged son.
