Bert arrived in Walford to visit his friend, Joe Macer, whose daughter Megan had told him of Joe's marriage to Pauline Fowler. Pauline did not get on with Bert, and resented letting him stay in her house. It later transpired that Bert was indebted to Joe after taking the rap for a burglary that they committed together.
Bert became romantically involved with Mo Harris, and they had an on-off relationship. Mo once caught him cheating on her with stallholder Ina in an alley off Walford market.
In December 2006, Bert reconciled with his terminally ill ex-wife, Evie. When she died, her friend Beryl brought their grandson, Jay to live with Bert, as he had no other family. Bert and Jay moved in together above Ian Beale's chip shop, and Bert was diagnosed with glaucoma. After much persuasion from Jay, he had the necessary surgery and made a full recovery.
In July 2007, Jay's father Jase arrived in Walford and hit it off with Jay. Feeling left out, Bert decided to move away, leaving father and son together.
