Summary
Ben is Kathy and Phil Mitchell's son, who was left partially deaf in one ear as a result of having had meningitis as a baby. He spent most of his life in South Africa with his mother and stepfather. After their deaths in a car crash, Ben returned to Walford with his half-brother, Ian Beale. Ben has been having a very difficult time adjusting to life as an orphan in Walford, which hasn't been helped by watching his estranged father threaten to burn his half-brother's face with Ben's own birthday candles.
Storylines
Hitting Freddie
In April 2006 Ben hit baby Freddie Mitchell with a stick, which caused Freddie to be brought to casualty. Jane Beale lied about Ben's involvement, which cast suspicion on Little Mo. Ben was left alone with Freddie again, after which Freddie was diagnosed with a mysterious brain injury. Ben later confessed to having injured Freddie on purpose.
Stella
In November 2006 Ben started to get jealous of Stella Crawford as his dad was giving all the attention to her. Ben played various pranks on Stella and refused to accept her acts of friendship. In a bid to get closer to Ben, she took him to the London Dungeon, promising him that she was not trying to replace his mother, but Ben got lost in the house of mirrors, and Stella hid and watched Ben's calling for her as he got more and more panicked.
After that Stella began using tactics to make Ben more obedient. Unknown to Phil, she began mentally and physically abusing Ben, doing things like splitting him and Abi Branning up, burning his hand, pinching him, locking him in a garage over night, telling him Phil did not love him, and breaking his hearing aid.
Ben tried to alert Ian Beale to what was going on, saying that bruises on his back were Stella's handywork, but after witnessing the resulting commotion, Ben admitted to Phil that the bruises were actually caused by bullies. Phil was angered by Ben's dishonesty and Stella used this to her advantage, convincing Ben that Phil was ashamed to call him his son, making him to rely on her more and more as his only ally. Stella manipulated Ben into persuading Phil to propose to her, which Phil did to give Ben a stable family unit.
On Stella and Phil's wedding day on 20th July 2007, Ben decided to stand up to Stella, telling her that he hated her and did not want her to marry his father. Stella became nasty and dragged Ben aside and scratched him until he bled, causing one of her fake nails to lodge into his skin, warning he would die if he tried to prevent the wedding.
During the ceremony Ben stood up as the wedding ceremony began, begging for help, he broke down in tears and Phil was horrified to see the extent of the mental and physical harm Stella had inflicted on his son. Peggy looked after Ben whilst Phil chased Stella to an old factory, where she jumped off the roof and died instantly.
