Summary
Barry was a bumbler who only ever really wanted two things from life: his father, Roy's respect, and the love of a good woman. Viewers were introduced to Barry before Roy; Barry was a slightly thuggish mate of David Wicks who provided a trysting spot for Cindy Beale and David; he later also helped Cindy escape Walford with the children.
As he was made a regular, he evolved into a rather pathetic character, forever trying his father's patience and making disastrous business decisions. He once even lost the family's savings to con-woman Vanessa Carlton who had managed to convince him of her love, before taking all his money. After Roy lost patience, Barry was relegated to running the local video store, where he soon (through back-stabbing) replaced mate Robbie Jackson as manager. While running the video store, he rented it's back room to a new tenant, Walford returnee Natalie Price, who soon won Barry's heart. They were married on New Year's Eve 1999, and quickly had a son, Jack.
But, in a devastating week for Barry, Natalie left him for Ricky Butcher and Roy died of a heart attack. Bereft and losing his grip, Barry clung on to the only person in view: Janine Butcher. She quickly took advantage of the situation, managing to seduce him and get engaged to him, all the while plotting with lover Paul Trueman to fleece Barry for every penny. Barry married Janine on New Year's Eve 2003, and by sunset the next day Janine watched him fall into a ravine and left him to die, leaving Janine a not-so-grieving widow with a large bank account and house of her own.
