Summary
Elder brother of Peggy Mitchell's late husband Eric Mitchell, father of Ronnie Mitchell and Roxy Slater.
He has an ex wife called Glenda.
Life before coming to Walford
Archie is the son of Phil Mitchell and Sandra Mitchell and brother of Eric Mitchell and Clive Mitchell and brother-in-law to Peggy Mitchell and used to help her out when his brother hit Peggy.
To most people he was/is a charming man who was friendly to everyone, but to his wife and daughter he came across nasty, which made his wife, Glenda become bitter and who eventually left him and moved to Australia.
When he found out that his daughter Ronnie Mitchell was pregnant at the age of 14, he took her away to some relatives and when she gave birth to her daugter Amy, he made her give the baby up for adoption.
Because of this, Ronnie left home in 1993 aged 19 Ronnie walked out in 1993 aged 19 and Archie hadn't seen or talked to her since. Ronnie was her father again in the Summer of 2008.
Reunion with his daughter in Dorset
On 8th July 2008, his daughter Ronnie Mitchell and ex sister in law Peggy Mitchell turned up at his house in Dorset looking for Roxy who was staying with her father. Peggy knew that Roxy was staying with Archie, but neglected to tell Ronnie this due to fear of her not turning up , which was a bit of a shock when the knocked at the door and Archie answered. who Ronnie havent seen in 15 years and she wants nothing to do with Archie. Ronnie refused to come into the house and waited outside until Roxy came out.
Archie and Peggy sat down for a chat later that night and talked about the old days and Archie said that a few years ago he got cancer and is now recovering well and that he wants to mend his relationship with Ronnie.
Ronnie eventually come into the house because of the cold and talked(well shouted at) with her father. It was then revealed by Archie that he had been in contact with Amy's adoptive parents years ago and was told that Amy had had an accident in the bath one time and died. This devastated Ronnie and yelled at her father that he was lying. Archie ripped her locket from around her neck and Ronnie hit him, before he pinned her down by the neck on the sofa, saying she wasn't going to take Roxy away from him.
At that point Roxy came in the room and saw Ronnie on the floor crying and told Ronnie that she will come back home if Ronnie and Archie made up. Roxy thought they did when they kissed on the cheeck, but Ronnie leaned in for a pretend kiss and said "i'll kiss your gravestone when you're dead".
Archie then asked Peggy if she wanted to stay a bit longer so they could chat more about the past. In the end Roxy and Ronnie left Dorset, with Peggy staying for a bit.
Living in Walford
A month later on 1st August 2008 Peggy and Archie enter The Vic in the aftermath of Sean Slater and Roxy Slater's wedding, it's revealed that Archie has proposed to Peggy while they were together in Dorset and they had set their eyes on a Spring wedding, but then thought it should be earlier so going for November. This angered Ronnie and Peggy asked her to leave.
The Master Manipulator
In October Peggy decided to see what Archie was up to and so sent a text from Suzy Branning's phone to Archie, but he finds out and says they might as well postpone the wedding because he can't trust Peggy.
Over the next few months he made her change her hairstyle and clothes saying that she would look classier dressed that way than she did before. He also started to make digs at Peggy to make Archie feel in control.
When her daughter Roxy went into premature labour on 17th November 2008, she asked Archie to find Sean, her husband so he could be there when the baby came. Archie pretended to ring Sean on his mobile infront of her. He did this because he didn't like Sean and didn't want him to be with Roxy.
In December 2008, he found Suzy Branning robbing the safe in the Queen Vic and said he wouldn't tell anyone if she did something for him, which was to get the DNA test results which say who Amy Slater's father is. When he hears that Sean Slater had put a deposit on a flat in Dagenham it angered Archie, which made him ask Suzy to put the DNA results in one of Ben Mitchell's crackers. The end result made Sean and Suzy leave Walford.
Danielle
On 19th March 2009 Archie found out that Danielle Jones was actually Ronnie's daughter, his granddaughter. So that Danielle wouldn't tell Ronnie(and reveal his lie), he convinced Danielle that Ronnie suffers from depression and that finding out the truth could destroy her and that he would have to tell her.
Oven the next week Danielle kept pestering Archie about whether he had told her yet and Archie avoided her. In the end he says he has told Ronnie about her and asks Danielle to meet in private on the night of his stag party, so he can tell her what he said.
He then takes a length of wire with him as he plans to keep her quite by killing her so no one would know the truth. They arrange to meet in Billy Mitchells flat, but when the moment arrives, he just can't bring himself to kill his granddaughter. He instead offers Danielle money and tells her to leave and never return.
His Wedding to Peggy and aftermath
On April 2nd 2009, Peggy and Archie Married, it wasn't a smooth ride though. Peggy hated the outfit Archie had chosed for her and so on Ronnie's advice, she changed into a wedding dress that Peggy bought just in case. Annoyed by this Archie and Peggy have a mini fight infront of everyone at the church in the middle of the ceremony. Peggy says to Archie at the alter that he either accepts her for who she is, or she walks away. Archie decides that he loves her all the same, and the ceremony proceeds.
During the wedding reception Danielle had snuck upstairs in the Queen Vic and Ronnie is unknowingly upstairs with her as she had just had a fight with her sister, Roxy Mitchell. Danielle meets her on the landing and tells her the truth, that she's her daughter.
Archie comes up behind Danielle and Ronnie asks if it's true that Danielle is her daughter. Archie tells Ronnie not to believe her as Danielle is mentally ill, Ronnie believes her dad and drags Danielle downstairs where everyone is listening to a speech. Danielle yells at Ronnie that she left an identical locket that Ronnie has on in her Champagne glass and to take a took (it's in Roxy's glass as Archie swapped name tags around). Ronnie ends up chucking her outside and goes back in to the reception and Archie tells everyone that Danielle is just a disturbed girl who needs help.
Later on during Billy Mitchell's best man speech, Ronnie asks if she can make a speech, she says how she was wrong about her father all this time. And makes a toast to him, and she takes a drink from Roxy's glass(hers was empty) and ends up finding the locket that Danielle left and immediately realises that she was telling the truth and that her dad was lying to her all this time and went after Danielle.
Peggy is disgusted by this and tells everyone in The Vic to get out.
When Ronnie finds her daughter, Danielle steps in the road towards her and is run over by Janine Butcher and dies in Ronnie's arms.
The next day it's revealed that Archie has been kicked out and Peggy has gone to stay with Sal Martin, her sister. Roxy disowns her father for everything he has done and chucks his belongings out in the street. Archie is then met by Janine Butcher, they share a understanding of sorts and he ends up staying at her flat.
Later Peggy comes back to the square and gives back every last bit of clothing bought by Archie for her to him in front of the whole pub.
Later that night Peggy asks Phil to kill Archie for her.
Leaving Walford
On 9 April 2009 when Archie was just about to leave Walford, he was bundled into a van. When he woke up he found himself captive with Phil towering over him in Phil's garage. Archie gets tormented by Phil and even thinks Phil is going to bury him alive, but Phil only chucks water over him.
Phil then tells Archie to leave Walford and never come back, because if he does he will kill him.
His Death
Archie Died on Christmas Day in 2009 in the Queen Vic. Currently no one knows, except the murderer, who killed him. In the few hours before he died, he had various confrontations with people, all of whom had a grudge against him, some of which were his family.
His Will
His will was read out by Billy Mitchell, this is what he gave to people:
- Billy Mitchell, his "stool" at the bar and his room in the Queen Vic, as a place for him to live where he cannot be thrown out.
- Peggy Mitchell, a silver framed photo of their wedding;
- Roxy and Ronnie's "first surviving child" £100,000 each to be held in trust until their 21st birthdays.
- Phil Mitchell, his father's "real" boxing trophy.
- Roxy Mitchell, his antique fountain pen, which she always wanted as a child, as well as the residue of his estate, including his house, car, an engagement ring, The Queen Victoria, the car lot and £3 million.
- Ronnie Mitchell, his signet ring (as well as a note regarding him expecting her to not take any substantial gifts from him).
- Janine Butcher, his Newton's cradle, "in the knowledge it will drive her absolutely nuts".
