Anya was a Ukrainian illegal immigrant, and exotic dancer. She abandoned her son, Tomas, in a church in Kent, for the vicar to care for. Dot Branning came across the child, and, knowing that the vicar was on holiday, took Tomas back to Walford. When the Brannings found a leaflet for a pole-dancing club, Jim visited it in an attempt to track the mother down. He was told that she had left, and travelled back to Walford, where Anya later arrived at their house.
Dot offered the riled mother a place to stay, but Jim did not agree, and reported her to the immigration authorities. As immigration paid the house a visit, Dot took Anya and Tomas, and hid them in the back of her car, then told immigration the call must have been a hoax.
The couple then took the mother and son to a nearby church, believing they would be safe in the sanctuary. The officers followed them to the church and Dot confronted them, telling them it was a sanctuary. Rice corrected her and Anya eventually decided to give herself up, but told Jim to take care of Tomas as she now trusted them.
