Summary

The First Queen of The Vic, Angie was a flamboyant and flirtatious hostess, whose exuberant public persona and jammy smile hid the wretched truth; that behind closed doors she was an over-dramatic and depressive alcoholic, who would go to any lengths to keep the man she loved, philandering Den Watts.

Although their relationship had been dead in the bedroom for a long time, and Den had had a mistress for years, Angie kept up the pretence of a happier life for the sake of "the punters", and more importantly, for the sake of their beloved adopted daughter, Sharon. That wasn't to say that Angie ever accepted that Den loved his mistress Jan Hammond, or that he would ever call time on their marriage, but she was happy to create an illusion, in public at least, that all was fine in the Watts marriage.

To numb her hurt Angie drunk heavily, and in order to play Den at his own game, and hoping to make him jealous, had several flings and affairs, including those with Tony Carpenter, Simon Wicks and Andy O'Brien. Den, having rowed with Jan found Angie comatose and had her rushed to hospital where her stomach was pumped.

The marriage appeared back on track, but of course Den was secretly seeing Jan again within days, and within months, he was making plans to leave Angie for good and marry Jan. When Angie was told of her wayward husband's divorce plans, she reacted by concocting a story that she had terminal cancer and only six months to live. This had the desired effect, and no further mention of divorce was made - until Christmas day. Den, having overheard Angie talking about her "big black lie" whilst on the Orient Express, served her with the long overdue divorce papers.

After licking her wounds, Angie rallied, and secured herself a job managing rival pub The Dagmar, run by James Wilmott-Brown. However the yuppy clientele eventually wore her down and just over a year after she'd left The Vic, Angie marched back in proposing that she and Den be business partners. Den accepted, and the partnership began, though she spent most of the first months in hospital with liver problems caused by her continuing battle with alcoholism, and then recuperating in Spain.

On her return from the Costas, it was evident that Angie's heart was not in her business partnership with Den, even if she did make all the right noises when they talked about starting over in Esher or Richmond. After a bit of digging Den discovered Angie was having an affair with their old friend Sonny and that the pair had plans to move to Spain to run a beach cafe. Angie's plan was to humiliate Den with her sudden departure and the wind was taken out of her sails when Den taunted that he'd known about her plans all along.

Angie never came back to Albert Square in life, but her body was returned for burial following her eventual death from an alcohol related illness in 2002.
