For the first twelve years of EastEnders, Dr Legg was Walford's GP. Initially he lived in Islington, running his surgery from the basement of the house he owned, 1 Albert Square. In 1986 and 1987, he employed Doctor Jaggat Singh to cover the surgery on certain days, and in 1988 to 1989, his nephew David joined him in the practice. Ethel Skinner was employed as a cleaner and Michelle Fowler as a receptionist. When Dr Legg retired in 1997, Fred Fonseca took over the surgery, with Josie McFarlane as his receptionist. After Fred left in 2000, Anthony Trueman was Walford's GP, with Alex Harrison as his senior partner in the practice. Following Dr Trueman in 2003 was Jonathan Leroy, and after Dr Leroy left, Oliver Cousins took up the position for four months in 2006, before moving to Leeds. His successor was May Wright, who was the GP from 2006 to 2007. Poppy Merritt was then Walford's GP until Al Jenkins took the job from 2009 to 2010. Following Al's departure to Cornwall, Yusef Khan took the job in 2011.

Flat 1b is the middle flat, directly above the Doctor's surgery and traditionally housing Walford's GP. Until 1988, Ethel Skinner lived there (with Barry Clark and Pat Wicks living with her at different points). Ethel moved into sheltered accommodation in 1988 when she could no longer manage the steps up to the flat. Following this, Dr Legg and his nephew David moved into the flat. Fred Fonseca later lived in 1b with flatmate Mick McFarlane from 1998 to 2000. The flat's occupant was not known again until 2006 when Oliver Cousins moved in. May Wright and her husband Rob Minter later replaced him, and Poppy Merritt and Al Jenkins both lived there during their tenures as Walford GPs. In 2011, Yusef Khan moved into flat 1b.

Lofty Holloway lived in the top flat until 1988, with his wife Michelle and stepdaughter Vicki joining him from 1986 to 1987. The flat was then not seen until Max Branning bought it for his son Bradley and his wife Stacey in 2007, but after Max and Stacey's affair was discovered, Bradley smashed the flat up and gave the keys back to Max. Heather Trott and her baby George later moved into the flat in 2010.
